    • In a radiation image read-out method using a stimulable phosphor sheet, read-out conditions in final read-out are adjusted based on preliminary read-out image information on a region recognized as an irradiation field. To recognize the irradiation field, sample image signals are extracted from preliminary read-out image signals at a picture element string extending from an end towards the center of the stimulable phosphor sheet. Changes between image density levels represented by the sample image signals are expressed by an approximate equation, and differences between imaginary image density levels calculated by the approximate equation and the actual image density levels are calculated. Or, the image density changes are expressed by approximate equations for picture element groups, and differences between imaginary image density levels calculated by the approximate equations in each picture element group are calculated. Or, intersections of lines represented by the approximate equations and an image density change curve higher than a predetermined density level and represented by the sample image signals are detected, and the intersection nearest to the sheet end is recognized as an edge of the irradiation field.

The image recording section is provided with a sheet holding system for recording the radiation image by exposing the stimulable phosphor sheet to a radiation passing through an object, and a fluoroscopic unit for receiving the radiation passing through the sheet holding system when the stimulable phosphor sheet is not held by the sheet holding system and for converting the radiation into a signal for reproducing a monitor image. By observing the monitor image, timing of the image recording is adjusted.

    • A radiation image recording and read-out apparatus comprises an image recording section, an image reading section, an erasing section, a circulating and conveying means for conveying stimulable phosphor sheets from section to section and a radiation source which is provided opposed to the image recording section spaced therefrom by a predetermined distance. The circulating and conveying means is arranged to convey the stimulable phosphor sheet in the image recording section. The radiation source is arranged to be movable over the object in the image recording section. A motion control mechanism moves the stimulable phosphor sheet and the radiation source relative to each other in the image recording section substantially satisfying a linear law and a geometric law with respect to a desired cross section of the object.
