    • Tone dependent plane dependent error diffusion halftoning takes into account multiple color planes, such as cyan and magenta, when determining the placement of a dot in any of the color planes. The combined tones of the correlated color planes is used to determine the threshold levels against which the combined tones and the accumulated errors for the correlated color planes is compared. Further, tone dependent error weightings are determined based on the combined tones of the correlated color planes. The tone dependent error weightings are used to diffuse the final accumulated errors for each color plane. A prerendered mid-tone bitmap may be used to break up any structured patterns that occur in the mid-tones. Using this technique, printed dots of two or more colors are dispersed so as to avoid noticeable clumping of dots of two or more colors to provide a more uniform pattern and to avoid the unintentional overlapping of colors. This technique can be used to augment any existing error diffusion method.

    • When a monitor display is to be printed by a color printer, the present invention transforms the monitor colors to compensate for chromatic adaption while mapping the monitor's neutral axis with the printer's neutral axis so neutral colors remain neutral. In the preferred embodiment, it is assumed that there is only partial chromatic adaption by the viewer. The result is that printing the transformed monitor colors using a color printer causes printed colors to appear to the human eye to be similar to the displayed monitor colors, while preserving neutral colors, once the human eye has adapted to the displayed monitor colors and the printed colors.

    • A data resolution synthesis algorithm takes low resolution source input data (e.g., data degraded from compression or data acquired from low quality imaging devices) to synthesize high resolution output data. In an exemplary embodiment for color printing, the algorithm is performed by characterizing a multi-pixel area, or window, around a pixel that can benefit from resolution enhancement. To interpolate to a high resolution output a set of spatial filters is applied to the data area based on the window characterization. The output of the resolution synthesizer is a set of multiple pixels for each input pixel, representing the source input pixel in a higher resolution enhanced version. The filters are chosen from a stored data base (generic or specifically applicable data base for each type input device) created to fit input/output device requirements.
