    • An apparatus for loading into and unloading objects from a ship has a horizontally displaceable support, a frame having a lower end, guides supporting the frame on the support only for vertical movement relative thereto, and a grab below the frame engageable with the objects. A mainly vertically extending cable is connected to the grab and vertically interengageable formations on the grab and frame lower end, when engaged together, arrest the grab horizontally relative to the frame. A winch or other drive is connected to the cable for reeling in and paying out the cable and thereby raising and lowering the grab relative to the frame lower end and bringing the formations into and out of engagement with each other.

    • For the transloading of loaded goods units (82), such as containers, interchangeable containers, semi-trailers or the like by means of transloading lifting gear (18) from or onto a slowly travelling train (6) formed by container cars (48), there is initially associated with each container car (48) to be unloaded and/or loaded a reference-point (R) the position of which, is continuously measured in relation to a fixed measuring section (40). Subsequently there is measured, in relation to the fixed measuring section (40)in the case of a unit (82) to be unloaded, the position, of at least one load attack point (81 ), andin the case of a unit (82) to be loaded, the position of locating elements (93) of the container car (48). The common center point (85) of the loadattack points (81) or of the locating elements (93) in relation to the reference point (R) is computed, the position of the center (86) of the load receiving points of the associated transloading lifting gear (18) is continuously measured in relation to the fixed measuring section (40, 41) and the transloading lifting gear is moved so that its load receiving center (86) coincides with the center (85) of the load attack points (8 1) or the locating elements (93).

    • Installations for trans-loading piece goods in the form of load units (3) such as containers, returnable vessels, semi-trailers or the like between road and railborne vehicles (2) comprise a single or multiple storey store (5, 6) for the load units (3) on one side of a single or multiple track railway line (1), a single or multiple lane roadway (9) on the other side of the store (5, 6) as well as lifting gear means (10, 11) for transferring the load units (3). In order to reduce the required floor area for simplifying the lifting gear means to be employed as well as accelerating the transfer, the store (5, 6) in such an installation is to be divided longitudinally into two parts with an operating space (7) accommodated between the store portions (5, 6) and having fixed to the four comers of the operating space (7) one load lifting gear means (11) each. The width of the operating space (7) corresponds at least to the length of the largest load unit which is to be transferred. In the operating space (7) a store lifting means (10) is movable which services the store parts. The load lifting gear means (11) have an operating radius of at least three quarters the length of the largest load unit and serve for loading and unloading the vehicles (2), in particular whilst travelling past at reduced velocity.
