    • A vehicle driven by a d.c. traction motor engergized from a battery has plugging means to dynamically brake the motor, an armature diode in shunt to the motor armature, and a plug current sensor including a ferromagnetic shielding and current carrying link connected in series with the armature diode and having a transverse depression and a constricted portion of reduced cross sectional area and also including a reed relay for controlling the plugging means disposed in the depression so that its contacts are operated by the magnetic field concentrated in the constricted portion of the link to thereby increase the sensitivity of the current sensor and prevent erratic plugging.

    • There is provided in accordance with an embodiment of the invention a wave trap assembly for connection in series with an electrical conductor means such as an electrical power transmission line for the purpose of attenuating or damping transient high frequency phenomena, and comprising a non-magnetic conductor member received in a slot in a stack of magnetic laminations, whereby the inductive effect of the magnetic laminations causes displacement of the high frequency transient currents into a reduced cross-sectional area of the conductor contiguous the outer periphery of the magnetic laminations, to modify the action of the normal high frequency skin effect whereby to more effectively attenuate the high frequency phenomena. The conductor may be cast in the slot. In a modified embodiment, the radially or peripherally outer portion of the conductor lying in the slot of the stack of magnetic laminations may be made of a higher resistance material than the radially inner portion of the conductor whereby to further attenuate high frequency transient currents flowing in the peripherally outer portion of the conductor. In a still further embodiment of a conductor lying in a slot in a stack of magnetic laminations, a radially inner conductor portion of larger cross section may be connected by a narrow cross-section neck portion to a radially outer conductor portion of smaller cross section than the radially inner conductor portion whereby to promote the transfer of high frequency transients to the outer portion. In another embodiment, the wave trap assembly may comprise a plurality of circumferentially spaced conductor members lying in slots in the peripheral surface of a drum-like stack of magnetic laminations. In still another embodiment, a plurality of wave trap assemblies may be supported by stand-off insulators and by conducting spacers in such manner as to be connected in series with each other and in series with the power transmission line.

    • A high speed switch for short-circuiting the electrical output of an alternating current generator or other generator. The shorting switch includes a stationary shorting bar connected to one electrical output line to be shorted. The other output lines to be shorted are respectively connected each to a separate hairpinshaped contact carrier of spring material and having low mass and low bounce characteristics. Each contact carrier is normally engaged by a "contact hold-down means" to hold the respective contact carrier and its associated contact out of conductive engagement with the shorting bar. The contact hold-down means is normally held in its contact hold-down (nonshorting) position by a magnetic detent device. Upon the occurrence of a fault in the electrical output system being protected, a signal is transmitted to the magnetic detent device to reduce the magnetic holding force sufficiently to permit the stored energy of the spring-like contact carriers, aided by an auxiliary spring, to rapidly move the contact hold-down means out of hold-down relation to the spring-like contact carriers, the contact carriers with their respective associated contacts moving into conductive engagement with the shorting bar. Shorting of the output lines instantaneously removes the energy source supplying fault current. In essence, the fault current is "diverted" from the fault to the shorting device. A motor driven relatching device is provided to move the armature which supports the contact holddown means into magnetically latched engagement with the magnetic detent means.

    • An impact crusher is disclosed having a rotor carrying a pair of hammer bars, with each hammer partly within an axially extending peripheral slot diametrically opposite each other. A portion of each leading hammer face within the slot and a facing wall of the slot cooperate to define therebetween a generally cylindrical cavity parallel to an axis about which the rotor rotates. A twopiece bushing is fitted in the cylindrical cavity at each end of the rotor, and each of the bushings comprises a pair of bushing halves each having a convex semi-cylindrical outer surface. The bushing halves are arranged within the cylindrical cavity with one convex surface engaging the hammer defined portion of the cavity and the other convex surface engaging the slot wall defined portion of the cavity, and with a diametrical plane along which the bushing is split into halves, being substantially parallel to the adjacent leading hammer face. The halves of each bushing define therebetween an internal conical shaped cavity with an apex end pointed inwardly of the adjacent end of the rotor. A frusto-conical plug is inserted into each bushing with apex ends pointed inwardly of adjacent ends of the rotor. A rod passes through central bores in both plugs, and nuts threaded on both rod ends hold the plugs relative to each other. Retaining walls are provided within the cylindrical cavity to limit movement of the bushings inwardly of their respective adjacent rotor ends. Movement of the frusto-conical plugs toward each other therefore moves each pair of bushing halves apart. As each pair of bushing halves move apart their convex outer semicylindrical surfaces move apart and apply forces which are directed radially of the bushings to both push the hammer radially into its slot and tangentially against the back wall of the slot, to securely lock the hammer in its slot.
