    • PURPOSE: Optically active azo compounds, a preparation method thereof and liquid crystal compositions are provided, which liquid crystal compositions are chemically stable, have a high response velocity and can be used in a guest-host mode. CONSTITUTION: The optically active azo compounds are represented by the formula 1, wherein R represents an alkyl group of C1-C20 and A represents a residue of an alpha-amino acid except a hydrogen atom. The azo compounds are prepared by reacting a phenol-type compound represented by the formula 2 and an optically active amino acid represented by the formula 3 in the presence of a condensing agent. The condensing agent is used such as N',N'-dicyclohexylcarbodiimide and N',N'-carbodiimidazole. The solvent is used such as tetrahydrofuran, methylene chloride, 1,2-dichloroethane and acetonitrile. The liquid crystal compositions comprise the azo compounds of the formula 1; the azo compounds of the formula 1 and achiral smectic liquid crystal compounds; or the azo compounds of the formula 1 and nematic liquid crystal compounds. If the compositions contain nematic liquid crystal compounds, the amount of the nematic compounds is preferably 0.01-50 wt%.
