    • PURPOSE: A preparation method of silica glass with a refractive index distribution by sol-gel process is provided, which gives shortened process and production time, and saved production cost compared with a conventional modified chemical vapor-phase deposition. CONSTITUTION: The preparation method comprises the steps of: dispersing fumed silice or silicon alkoxide as a starting material into deionized water or alcohols to form a sol; forming the sol to a gel; drying the gel for a first dried gel; hydrolyzing the first dried gel by putting the gel into an additive solution such as GeCl4 or germanium ethoxide, which arises from the reaction between water in dried gel and additive solution; drying the first dried gel for a second dried gel; thermal treating the second dried gel at low temperature in Cl2 gas atmosphere to remove metallic impurities and hydroxyl group; and sintering the second dried gel in He gas atmosphere for glassification.
