    • A shading correcting circuit and a method of controlling the circuit are provided to optimize a bit length of a correction coefficient for shading correction, store the optimized bit length, and reduce the quantity of data of the correction coefficient. A shading correcting circuit corrects a shading characteristic in one of a direction parallel with image data and a direction perpendicular to the image data and has a correction coefficient with a predetermined bit length according to a pixel position. A bit length of the correction coefficient, which corresponds to the center of the image data, is shorter than a bit length corresponding to the edge of the image data.
