    • Provided are a method to recognize a traffic sign capable of detecting and identifying a traffic sign while reducing the operation time and a system thereof. The system to recognize a traffic sign includes: an image data acquisition device which acquires an image; and a traffic sign recognition device which performs color division of the image, extracts a polygon or a circle matched to the image using a polygonal approximation method or a circular ranging method, obtains a traffic sign candidate, compares the traffic sign candidate with a pre-stored template using speed up robust features (SURF) algorithm or an oriented fast and rotated brier (ORB) algorithm, and identifies a traffic sign. By doing so, it is possible to reduce the operation time to recognize and output a traffic sign.
