    • PURPOSE: A structure for a steering column of a vehicle is provided to reduce injury of the breast and the face of a driver against a steering wheel through active collapse by restricting interference with the crash pad and the upper shroud at a head-on collision, to minimize injury of the knee and the thigh of the driver by increasing distance between the lower shroud and the knee of the driver at an offset collision, and to prevent noise and vibration by fastening the upper steering shaft firmly. CONSTITUTION: The steering column of a vehicle is composed of an upper steering shaft mounting a steering wheel(1); a lower steering shaft(2b) connected to the lower part of the upper steering shaft through a joint(3); upper and lower column tubes(4a,4b) embedding and supporting the upper and lower steering shafts; upper and lower shrouds(6a,6b) surrounding the outside of the upper steering shaft protruded out of a crash pad(5); and a multifunction switch(7) placed in the upper and lower shrouds. The body of the multifunction switch is eliminated, and the upper and lower shrouds are decreased for the center of the column.

    • PURPOSE: A sound insulating layer with integral boot is provided to eliminate a seam and consequent seam leakage associated with the boot and eliminate the need for separate boot fasteners. CONSTITUTION: An acoustical barrier(10) for mounting to the fire wall(20) of a motor vehicle includes a sound barrier layer(12) of a molded construction and sound dampening characteristics. The sound barrier layer has an integrally molded boot(40) for receiving and acoustically sealing a steering column(70). The boot has a base portion(42) integrally molded with a convolute portion(48), and a cap portion(56) integrally molded with the convolute portion. The convolute portion includes a continuous outer wall section(50) surrounding an opening(46) in the sound barrier layer. The continuous outer wall section has an upper end integrally formed with a flexible bight portion(54). A continuous inner wall(52) has an upper end integrally formed with the bight portion and a lower end integrally formed with the cap portion. The cap portion has an opening coincident with the openings in the sound barrier layer and fire wall. The thickness of the convolute portion is less than the thickness of the base portion, cap portion and sound barrier layer to prevent distortion of the sound barrier layer during installation of the steering column(70). An absorber layer can be mounted between the sound barrier layer and fire wall.
