    • A relative impedance measurement is provided to increase the accuracy and reliability of position measurements in case of the absence of specific calibration of the impedances of human body-surface electrodes. At least first, second, and third electrodes are coupled to a surface of a human body at respective locations. A first current passing through the human body is measured between the first and second body-surface electrodes. A second current passing through the human body is measured between the first and third body-surface electrodes. A contact factor representing impedance between at least one of the human body-surface electrodes and the surface of the human body is derived by using the first and second currents.

    • A reference catheter is provided to accurately determine a position of a target probe in real-time by measuring impedance differences between the target probe and reference probes and applying a calibration factor to the measured impedance difference. A reference probe(42) includes at least one reference electrode which is arranged at a predetermined position in a body of a user. A target probe(22) includes at least one target electrode which is attached to the body of the user. A controller(28) applies a first current between body surface electrodes and the reference electrode, while the reference probe is located at a known position, measures a first characteristic of the first current, generates an estimation of the known position by using the first characteristic, and determines a compensation factor based on a relation between the known position and the position estimation. The controller applies a second current between body surface electrodes and the reference electrode, measures a second characteristic of the second current, generates a calculated position of the target probe, and applies the compensation factor to the calculated position.

    • A method and an apparatus for detecting a skin impedance are provided to accurately detect a position of an artificial material by using the measurement of impedance while sensing the position of the probe. A probe includes at least one probe electrode and is inserted into a body of an object having a body surface. Conductive body surface patches(32,34,36) are fixed on the body surface at surface positions and include first and second electrodes which are electrically insulated from each other. An electric circuit arranges the first and second electrodes in series with each other in an operation calibration mode and the first and second electrodes in parallel to each other in an operation detection mode. A controller is coupled with the probe and the body surface patch, so that the first and second electrodes pass a first electric signal through the first and second electrodes in the operation calibration mode. The controller measures impedance characteristics of a second electric signal to determine position coordinates of the probe at the operation detection mode.

    • Model-based correction of position measurements is provided to improve the visualization of a probe by stabilizing a displayed image of the probe or a catheter in using a measurement technique based on impedance. A method for sensing a position of a probe inserted into a patient's human body includes the steps of: sensing an outward position of the probe in the human body(80); establishing that a primary displacement between the outward position of the probe and a previous position matches with a primary shift speed exceeding a programmed limit for a predetermined time; adjusting the outward position to a new position so that a second displacement between the new position and the previous position matches with a secondary shift speed less than the programmed limit(86); and displaying the new position. The outward position is sensed by measuring impedance between the probe and plural locations remotely separated from the probe.
