    • PURPOSE: A cryogenic cooling system is provided to improve reliability, and to cool a superconductive coil of a rotary machine by using a forcibly moving helium cooling system in cooling or normal mode. CONSTITUTION: A cryogenic cooling system(10) for a superconductive electric machine(12) includes a first set(14) of components arranged in a first circuit(16), adapted to forcibly flow a cryogen in the first circuit into and from the superconductive electric machine, and being operable in a cooling mode for cooling the superconductive electric machine to the normal operating temperature by cooling the cryogen; and a second set(18) of components arranged in a second circuit(20), adapted to forcibly flow the cryogen in the second circuit from the superconductive electric machine and being operable in a normal mode for maintaining the cryogen and keeping the superconductive electric machine at the normal operating temperature.

    • A method of operating a cryogenic cooling system is provided to cool superconductive coils of a rotating machine and provide redundancy for improved system reliability through a forced flow helium cooling system having cooldown and normal modes of operation. A method of operating a cryogenic cooling system comprises a first set of components(14) and a second set of components(18). The first set of components is arranged in a first circuit(16) and adapted to forced flow of a cryogen to and from a superconductive electric machine(12), and operates in a cooldown mode for cooling the cryogen such that the superconductive electric machine lowers down to a normal operating temperature. The second set of components is arranged in a second circuit(20) and adapted to force flow of a cryogen to and from the superconductive electric machine, and operates in a normal mode for maintaining the cryogen such that the superconductive electric machine remains at the normal operating temperature.
