    • Provided is a method for preparing a low molecular weight polysaccharide having a molecular weight of 500-50,000 and its salt to prevent the generation of by-products and to lower a manufacturing cost. The method comprises the step of hydrolyzing a hyaluronic acid of high molecular weight in an aqueous solution or a mixture solvent by using an ion exchange resin. Preferably the low molecular weight polysaccharide and its salt are represented by the formula I, wherein n is an integer of 1-120; and R is H or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt. Preferably the method comprises the steps of dissolving a hyaluronic acid sodium salt of high molecular weight in water or a mixture solvent of water and a low molecular weight alcohol; adding 0.01-50 % of ion exchange resin and stirring the mixture at 20-100 deg.C for 24-120 hours; and filtering it to remove the ion exchange resin and freeze-drying the solution.
