    • PURPOSE: A method for coupling plastic optical fibers is provided which has a low connection loss, and an optical fiber unit having a connection part provided by the method is provided. CONSTITUTION: A method for coupling plastic optical fibers(8, 9), comprising: providing a holder, which includes a groove(2) for holding plastic optical fibers(8,9) in a longitudinal direction; and abutting and coupling opposed end faces of the plastic optical fibers(8,9) together while causing the holder to apply a lateral pressure to the plastic optical fibers(8,9) therein to sandwich the plastic optical fibers(8,9). The groove(2) of the holder has openings at opposite ends of the holder, the openings have inclined portions(3), and the opposed end faces of the respective plastic optical fibers(8,9) are abutted and coupled together by introducing opposed ends of the plastic optical fibers(8,9) from the openings into the groove(2) in the holder through the inclined portions(3) by use of flexibility of the holder with the lateral pressure preliminarily applied thereto.

    • PURPOSE: A branching method for an optical fiber cable is provided to improve a middle distance communication by using plastic optical fibers. CONSTITUTION: A slotted spacer(3) is provided with six slots(4) helical in one direction on its outer circumference. And the slotted spacer(3) is provided with a single tension member(6) at the center. At this point, in each slot, a single plastic optical fiber(2) is accommodated. Thus, the optical fiber cable(1) is a six core optical fiber cable. The spacer(3) is surrounded by a covering layer(5), which protects the entire optical fiber cable. The slotted spacer is provided with a plurality of slots, and the number of slots are usually from 4 to 12. The number of plastic optical fibers accommodated in one slot is one or more, usually from one to 8. Thus, the optical fiber cable usually has from 4 to 96 cores.
