A planar light source device(10) includes a first substrate(101), a second substrate(103), a frit(102), first electrodes(107a,109a), and second electrodes(107b,109b). The second substrate is located at a distance from the first substrate and forms a discharge region. The frit is placed between the edges of the first and second substrates to bond the first and second substrates to each other and seal up the discharge region. The first electrodes are formed on the first substrate and the second electrodes are formed on the second substrate. At least part of the edges of the first and second substrates, which come into contact with the frit, includes protrusions and depressions.

    • A display device is provided to partially control brightness of a screen to clearly view a text image such as caption displayed on top and bottom parts of the screen to thereby improve the display quality of the display device. A display device includes a display panel and a light generator(400). The display panel includes a first display area(DA1) and a second display area(DA2). The second display area is located in close proximity to the top and bottom of the first display area. The light generator includes first and second lamp groups composed of a plurality of lamps. The light generator respectively provides lights with different brightnesses to the first display area and the second display area based on an image signal provided to the display panel. The image signal includes image information and text information. The image information is displayed in the first display area and the text information is displayed in the second display area.

In horizontal both ends of the first substrate where temperature is relatively high, a graphite sheet having a relatively wide width so as to transfer mass heat is disposed. In the horizontal center where temperature is relatively low, a graphite sheet having a relatively smaller width is disposed. The unbalance of mercury is prevented by uniformly distributing temperature.
