    • PURPOSE: A steering mechanism for a vehicle is provided to reduce noise during operating, and to align a rack to a pinion easily and mechanically by manufacturing the steering mechanism conveniently. CONSTITUTION: A steering system has a rack housing formed of a first tube(14) and a pinion housing(16) formed of a second tube(18). A first opening is provided in the first tube and a second opening is formed in the second tube. The first opening and the second opening expose respective fillets. The relative position of first opening and the second opening determines the position of the first tube with respect to the second tube. A first bushing(40) and a second bushing(42) are used to support a rack(36) within the first tube. A pinion shaft(60) positioned within the second tube has a pinion gear(62) for coupling with the rack. A first bracket(26) and a second bracket(28) are positioned on the first tube adjacent to the first bushing and the second bushing.
