摘要： PURPOSE: An image reading device and an image reading method are provided to prevent the pickup of an image with bad quality and suitably compensate the brightness of the image. CONSTITUTION: An image reader(1) picks up an image of an object to which light is irradiated from environment. The first and second brightness detectors(6-1,6-2) measure the brightness of the object. The first and second brightness detectors are disposed near a position in which the object is disposed. The first brightness detector is disposed in an edge of the region in which the object is disposed. The second brightness detector is disposed in a position of an edge which is different from the position in which the first brightness detector is disposed.

The manuscripts are placed to a position supported by two arms(6) of the supporter. When the arm is put on the support in parallel to a lengthwise axis(56) and two users use the scanner by seeing the manuscripts from a lengthwise direction, the arm is placed to the position apart from a line connecting between two users.
