    • PURPOSE: Provided is a UV-absorbing glass, borosilicate glass, with chemical resistance, high transmission, and sharp UV absorption edge or limit for use in xenon(or fluorescent) lamp, display device, plate backlighting device, etc. CONSTITUTION: The borosilicate glass with chemical resistance against hydrolysis comprises 67-74wt.% of SiO2, 5-10wt.% of B2O3, 3-10wt.% of Al2O3, 0-4wt.% of Li2O, 0-10wt.% of Na2O, 0-10wt.% of K2O, wherein the total amount of Li2O, Na2O and K2O is 0.5-10.5wt.%, 0-2wt.% of MgO, 0.3wt.% of CaO, 0-3wt.% of SrO, 0-3wt.% of BaO, 0-3wt.% of ZnO, wherein the total amount of MgO, CaO, SrO, BaO and ZnO is 0-6wt.%, 0-3wt.% of ZrO2, 0-1wt.% of CeO2, 0-10wt.% of TiO2, 0-10wt.% of Bi2O3 and 0.1-10wt.% of MoO3, wherein the total amount of TiO2, Bi2O3 and MoO3 is 0.1-10wt.%. The glass composition contains optionally 50ppm of Fe2O3 and 0.01-2wt.% of As2O3 as a refiner, and the resultant glass contains Ti, especially in the form of 90wt.% of Ti4+.

    • A metal halide arc discharge lamp includes a sealed outer envelope, an arc tube located within the envelope, a cylindrical shroud positioned around the arc tube, stops positioned at ends of the shroud to capture the shroud therebetween, and conduction wires which both provide electrical energy to the arc tube and mechanically support the arc tube and the shroud. The outside diameter of the shroud is maximized in relation to the inside diameter of the neck of the outer envelope such that the shroud can be inserted through the neck during manufacture of said lamp. In order to reduce electrolytic sodium loss, a conductor wire passing through the shroud in close proximity to the arc tube is surrounded by a ceramic sleeve to electrically insulate the conductor wire from the arc tube, and the stops are ceramic to electrically insulate the shroud from the conductor wires.
