    • The invention relates to a method for the selective catalytic reduction of nitrogen oxides (NOx) in the exhaust gas of an internal combustion engine (2). According to the invention, the addition of a reaction agent (5) takes place in the exhaust gas system (1) of the internal combustion engine (2), upstream of an SCR catalyst (3), said agent consisting of one of the following reaction agents: a) a reductant and b) a reductant precursor and a structure (4), which can at least be surrounded by the exhaust gas, is configured immediately downstream of the addition of the reaction agent. Said method comprises at least the following steps: 1.1) determination of the nitrogen oxide fraction of the exhaust gas; 1.2) determination of the temperature of the structure (4); 1.3) determination of a quantity of reaction agent that is required for the reduction of the nitrogen oxide fraction determined in step 1.1); 1.4) determination of the temperature of the structure (4) after the addition of the aforementioned quantity of reaction agent; 1.5) comparison of the temperature of the structure (4) with a predeterminable target temperature; 1.6) calculation of the temperature of the structure (4) after at least one of the following measures, if the temperature is lower than the target temperature: 1.6a) addition of a reduced quantity of reaction agent and 1.6b) increase of at least one of the following temperatures: 1.6b.1) the temperature of the structure (4); and 1.6b.2) an exhaust gas temperature, until the temperature of the structure (4) after the addition of the quantity of reaction agent is higher than or matches the target temperature; and 1.7) addition of the quantity of reaction agent and optional raising of the temperature according to step 1.6b).
