    • The invention concerns a method for supplying iron, via the fuel, to the particulate trap of a diesel engine exhaust in a form suitable for promoting trap regeneration. The method involves the addition to the fuel of a defined colloid of iron oxide. Combustion of this colloid produces iron-containing compounds, especially iron oxides, which collect in association with carbonaceous particulate matter in the particulate trap, and function to promote the combustion of this matter. The colloid in particular shows a lower level of associated deposit formation on the fuel injectors than the iron additives of the prior art. The method is thus particularly suitable for modern engines showing increased susceptibility to fuel injector deposits. The colloid also shows a balance of properties providing excellent suitability for use as an additive in fuels, and especially in diesel engine on-board dosing devices.

    • Improvement methods of fuel oil compositions and fuel oil compositions are provided to contain detergent species and be susceptible to the formation of wax at low temperatures, wherein low temperature properties of the fuel containing a wax anti-settling additive and a polyamine detergent can be restored by the additional presence of a third co-additive species. As a method of improving low temperature properties of a fuel oil composition comprising a major amount of a fuel oil and minor amounts of (a) at least one polar nitrogen compound effective as a wax anti-settling additive and (b) at least one polyamine detergent, the method comprises adding (c) at least one acidic organic species to the composition. The at least one polar nitrogen compound comprises an oil-soluble polar nitrogen compound having one or more, preferably two or more, substituents of the formula >NR^13, where R^13 represents a hydrocarbyl group containing 8 to 40 atoms, wherein the substituent or one or more of the substituents may be formed in the form of a cation derived therefrom. The at least one polar nitrogen compound comprises an amide-amine salt formed by reacting one molar proportion of phthalic anhydride with one molar proportion of dihydrogenated tallow amine. The at least one polyamine detergent comprises a reaction product of a poly(isobutene) substituted succinic anhydride acylating agent and a polyamine or a mixture of polyamines. The acidic organic species comprises an unsaturated monocarboxylic acid having 8 to 30 carbon atoms, preferably 12 to 22 carbon atoms.

    • A diesel fuel composition, and a method for removing the injector deposits in a diesel engine using the same are provided to reduce the generating rate of the deposits in a modern diesel engine fuel injector, effectively. A diesel fuel composition comprises a major amount of diesel fuel, a minor amount of at least one metal compound, and a minor amount of detergent additive. The detergent additive is used to remove or reduce injector deposits in a diesel engine operated by diesel fuel containing a minor amount of a metal-containing compound. The detergent additive comprises two kinds of compounds expressed by different chemical formulas. The diesel engine has a fuel injector having a plurality of spray-holes, wherein each of the spray-holes has an inlet and an outlet. The fuel injector has one or more of the following characteristics: a spray-hole which is tapered such that the inlet diameter is larger than the outlet diameter, a spray-hole having an outlet diameter of 0.10 mm or less, a spray-hole of which an inner edge of the inlet is rounded, six or more spray-holes, an operating tip temperature over 250°C.
