    • A distance relay for protection of a transmission line, which is capable of estimating apparent impedances with respect to faults on the transmission line involving fault resistances, more particularly faults at local and remote ends of a protection zone of the transmission line, and compensating for the magnitudes and phases of the estimated apparent impedances, so as, to minimize a reactance effect resulting in a mal-operation or non-operation or the distance relay. If a fault occurs on the transmission line, the distance relay determines whether the amount of zero-sequence current resulting from overcurrent exceeds a predetermined threshold value, so as to determine whether the occurred fault is an earth fault or a short fault. The distance relay obtains an apparent fault location and a current distribution factor by calculating an apparent resistance and apparent reactance based on the earth fault or short fault, and then corrects an apparent impedance by calculating a phase angle from equations of the apparent impedance and a voltage at a location where the distance relay is installed. After correcting the apparent impedance, the distance relay determines whether a trip signal is required to be generated. If the trip signal generation is required, then the distance relay generates the trip signal.

    • PURPOSE: A distance relay is provided to minimize a reactance which causes erroneous operation of the distance relay, by compensating size and phase of the impedance estimated by the distance relay upon occurrence of accident accompanied with a failure resistance in a transmission line. CONSTITUTION: A distance relay operates by a step(S100) of receiving voltage and current signals; a step(S110) of filtering the received signal; a step(S120) of calculating a power frequency component from the filtered signal; a step(S130) of judging whether an over current flows by comparing the power frequency component calculated in the previous step with a threshold value; a step(S140) of judging whether it is a ground fault of disconnection fault, if the over current flows; a step(S150) of calculating an estimated impedance if it is judged as a ground fault; a step(S160) of calculating an estimated fault point; a step(S170) of calculating a zero-phase-sequence component current distribution coefficient; a step(S180) of calculating a phase angle; a step(S190) of calculating a corrected impedance by correcting the estimated impedance through the use of the value of the phase angle; a step(S200) of performing the step(S160) if the difference between the current corrected impedance and the previous corrected impedance is larger than a preset value, and performing the subsequent step if the difference is smaller; a step(S210) of calculating an estimated impedance if it judged as a disconnection fault; steps(S220 to S240) of calculating an estimated fault point, a zero-phase-sequence component current distribution coefficient and a phase angle; a step(S250) of calculating a corrected impedance; a step(S260) of performing the step(S220) if the difference between the current corrected impedance and the previous corrected impedance is larger than a preset value, and performing the subsequent step if the difference is smaller; a step(S270) of judging whether the corrected impedance falls within a protection range; and a step(S280) of performing a filtering step if the corrected impedance does not fall within the protection range, and generating a trip signal if the corrected impedance falls.
