    • Multiple-In Multiple-Out (MIMO) techniques are used to increase spectral efficiency of a cellular single frequency network. In some embodiments with single transmit antenna per cell, multiple data streams are transmitted from multiple cells, one data stream per set of transmit antennae. The mapping of streams to antenna sets is permuted in time. In this way, user equipment devices (UEs) at cell edges benefit from MIMO, and UEs near cell centers benefit from high carrier-to-interference (C/I) ratio of the signal. In some embodiments, each stream is concurrently transmitted on base layer of a hierarchically modulated signal from one set, and on enhancement layer of a hierarchically modulated signal from another set. The mapping of sets to streams is permuted in time. The UEs at cell edges benefit from MIMO, and the UEs near cell centers benefit from the high C/I to decode both streams from the base and enhancement layers.

    • A method for decoding a spatially multiplexed signal and its corresponding receiver are provided to receive optimally a spatially multiplexed signal without abandoning optimality in the conventional technology while not performing an exhaustive search operation by optimizing the performance of a receiver without generating an error propagation phenomenon. A method for decoding a spatially multiplexed signal comprises the following several steps. A set composed of possible values of the first symbol included in a constellation is selected(01). A value of the second symbol regarding each of the first symbol selected is calculated and an estimated value of the second symbol is generated(02). An Euclidean distance between a received symbol and a noiseless signal is calculated and the noiseless is defined by using the first symbol, which has the selected value, and the second symbol, which has the calculated value(03). The shortest one is selected among Euclidean distances calculated regarding differently selected values included in the set composed of the possible values of the first symbol(04). The first and the second symbols, which are matched with the selected shortest Euclidean distance, are selected(05).
