摘要： A composition for preventing and treating arthritis comprising the extract of Betula platyphylla var. japonica is provided to inhibit edema, pain, production of TNF-alpha(tumor necrosis factor-alpha) and NO(nitric oxide), inflammation, decomposition of proteoglycan and collagen, and activity of MMP-13(matrix metalloproteinnase-13) and MMP-3, and reduce cytotoxicity. The composition for preventing and treating arthritis comprises the extract of Betula platyphylla var. japonica, wherein the Betula platyphylla var. japonica extract is prepared with water or C1-C4 lower alcohol; the arthritis is degenerative arthritis, rheumatoid arthritis or Lupus arthritis; the composition is a pharmaceutical or health food composition; and the daily dosage of the Betula platyphylla var. japonica extract is 0.001-100 mg/kg.
