    • An LCD(Liquid Crystal Display) is provided to correctly compensate liquid crystal cells using an optical anisotropic layer to improve the display quality and viewing angle of the LCD. An LCD includes two polarization films(1,12), a pair of substrates(5,9), a liquid crystal layer, liquid crystal cells and an optical anisotropic layer(4,10). Absorption axes(2,13) of the two polarization films are perpendicular to each other. The liquid crystal layer is interposed between the pair of substrates and composed of liquid crystal molecules. When a voltage is not applied to the LCD, the liquid crystal molecules are aligned in a direction approximately perpendicular to the substrates in the liquid crystal cells. The optical anisotropic layer has optically minus refractive anisotropy. The optical anisotropic layer is formed of a compound containing a dischotic liquid crystal compound.
