이와 같은 구성의 집합건물용 우편함 시스템은, 아파트나 대형 빌딩 등과 같은 집합주택에 설치되어 있는 현관출입 통제장치를 통해 식별 인증된 각 세대에 해당하는 우편함의 우편물 유무를 감지하고, 우편물이 있는 경우 이를 음성 및 화면으로 실시간 안내한 뒤 출입자로부터 반출유무 신호를 입력받아 해당 우편함의 도어를 개방시켜 우편물 반출을 가능하게 한다. 따라서, 우편물의 보관 유무를 현관문 근처에서 안내 받음에 따라 우편함이 설치된 곳 까지 이동할 필요가 없으므로 공동 우편함의 설치 장소에 대한 자유도를 높일 수 있으며, 우편함의 도어가 자동으로 개폐되므로 그에 따른 편의성을 높일 수 있는 이점이 있다.
