    • Disclosed is an electric double layer capacitor comprising a first collector, a first polarizable electrode layer formed on the first collector, a second collector, a second polarizable electrode layer so formed on the second collector as to face the first polarizable electrode layer, an insulating separator arranged between the first polarizable electrode layer and the second polarizable electrode layer, and an electrolyte solution for drive which is impregnated into the first polarizable electrode layer and the second polarizable electrode layer. The polarizable electrode layers mainly contain an activated carbon composed of a phenol resin, while having a surface roughness of not more than 0.6 mum and an electrode density of 0.5-0.7 g/cm^3. This electric double layer capacitor hardly suffers from deterioration of characteristics even at low temperatures, thereby having excellent long-term reliability.
