    • A display device and a driving method thereof are provided to improve display quality by using one switching element according to each pixel. A display device includes a plurality of pixels, a signal control unit(400), a gradation voltage generating unit(500), and a data driving unit(300). The signal control unit receives an original image signal of a current frame and outputs a first output image signal correcting the original image signal for a first section among one frame, the original image signal of the current frame for a second section with a sustain time different from the first section, and a second output image signal by using the original image signal of the following frame. A gradation voltage generating unit produces a first gradation voltage group corresponding to a first gamma curve(g1) and a second gradation voltage group corresponding to a second gamma curve. A data driver converts a first output image signal to a first data voltage based on the first gradation voltage group and converts a second output image signal to a second data voltage based on the second gradation voltage group. The data driver outputs the first and second data voltage to the pixel corresponding to the pixel voltage for the current frame successively.

    • A display device is provided to minimize gray inversion in a bias ECB(Electrically Controlled Birefringence) mode and to reduce gray inversion. A display device comprises a pair of substrates(410,411), electrodes, a pair of alignment layers, and a liquid crystal layer(445). The electrodes are formed on the substrates. The alignment layers, separated from each other and facing each other, respectively are formed on the electrodes. The liquid crystal layer, which contains liquid crystal particles, is formed at a space which is defined between the alignment layers. When voltage is not supplied to the electrodes, some of the liquid crystal particles are aligned along the rubbing directions of the alignment layers which are rubbed in the opposite directions to each other. If bias voltage is supplied, the partial particles are aligned so as to be slanted for the substrates. The bias voltage has a value between the threshold voltage of the liquid crystal layer and the maximum voltage equivalent to the highest gray level.

Plural pixels have image display regions. A liquid crystal device of an OCB(Optically Compensated Bend) mode transfers an alignment state of a liquid crystal from a spray alignment to a bend alignment so as to perform a display operation. The liquid crystal device includes a reverse driver(43) and a converting unit(44). The reverse driver includes plural reverse driving modes for periodically reversing a relative polarity of a voltage, which is applied to the pixels. The converting unit reverses the plural reverse driving modes when the spray alignment is transferred to the bend alignment.

    • An LCD is provided to reduce coloring in a black display and improve a good display resolution at a wide viewing angle by forming a color filter such that a blue layer has a contrast ratio higher than that of a green layer. An OCB (optically compensated bend) liquid crystal layer(3) is provided in a plurality of liquid crystal pixels between a pair of substrates. Color filters(CF) are disposed on the plurality of liquid crystal pixels and include red, green, and blue layers. Polarizing plates(PL) are arranged so as to face the liquid crystal pixels at at least a viewing side. The blue layer has a contrast ratio higher than that of the green layer. The blue layer has a contrast ratio higher than that of the red layer. An optical compensating device is disposed to adjoin the polarizing plate at at least a viewing side. The optical compensating device optically compensates for retardation of the OCB liquid crystal layer at a predetermined display state that a voltage is applied to the OCB liquid crystal layer. The OCB layer has different thicknesses in different color pixels.

    • An LCD(Liquid Crystal Display) and a method for driving the LCD are provided to improve the contrast and brightness of a displayed image in an OCB(Optically Compensated Bend) mode LCD, by turning on a light source during a first period and turning off the light source during a second period. An LCD comprises an LCD panel(3) having a plurality of pixels, a light source for illuminating the LCD panel, and a controller for controlling the LCD panel and the light source. The controller includes a non-video signal insertion unit and a driving unit(7). The non-video signal insertion unit makes the pixels store a first voltage corresponding to video signal during a first period of one frame and store a second voltage corresponding to non-video signal during a second period next to the first period. The driving unit turns on the light source during a period corresponding to the first period, and turns off the light source during a period corresponding to the second period. The first voltage and the second voltage are set at different independent values.
