CONSTITUTION: In a hydrocarbon trap catalyst for purifying exhaust gas comprising zeolite layer that is a hydrocarbon trap layer, and three way catalyst layer formed at an upper side of the zeolite layer, the heat resistant hydrocarbon trap catalyst is characterized in that diffusion barrier of porous silica having a specific surface area of 100 to 300 m¬2/g is formed on upper and lower sides of the zeolite layer so that the diffusion barrier forms upper and lower layers of the zeolite layer. In a preparation method of hydrocarbon trap catalyst for purifying exhaust gas comprising a step (a) of laying up zeolite layer that is a hydrocarbon trap layer on a ceramic supporter; and a step (b) of laying up three way catalyst on the zeolite layer, the preparation method of heat resistant hydrocarbon trap catalyst comprises the steps of first laying up diffusion barrier by drying and calcining the supported porous silica powder after supporting porous silica powder having a specific surface area of 100 to 300 m¬2/g before laying up the zeolite layer; laying up the zeolite layer on the diffusion barrier; and laying up another diffusion barrier on the zeolite layer by drying and calcining the supported porous silica powder after supporting porous silica powder having a specific surface area of 100 to 300 m¬2/g onto the zeolite layer.
