    • A fixed-bed reactor having an ion-exchange resin catalyst layer. The reactor has a liquid collection/discharge mechanism in a lower part thereof, and a liquid reaction mixture yielded is discharged through the liquid collection/discharge mechanism. In the fixed-bed reactor, the liquid collection/discharge mechanism comprises: inflow pipes which have, at the front ends thereof, a screen or perforated board for enabling the liquid reaction mixture to pass therethrough and which have lengths regulated so that the ends thereof conform to the curved bottom surface of the fixed-bed reactor; liquid collection pipes which have been connected to the back ends of the inflow pipes and serve to collect the liquid reaction mixture which has passed through the inflow pipes; and a liquid discharge pipe which has been connected to the liquid collection pipes and serves to discharge the liquid reaction mixture outside the system. Due to the constitution, the liquid reaction mixture passing through the packed-catalyst layer flows evenly, and the lower part of the reactor can be prevented from having a space not filled with the catalyst. Thus, the fixed-bed reactor has an improved product yield per unit reactor capacity and unit time. Also provided is a process for producing bisphenol A in which the reactor is used.

    • A process for the production of bisphenol A by condensing phenol with acetone in the presence of a strongly acidic ion-exchange resin, wherein an ion-exchange resin is judged to be a high-quality strongly acidic ion-exchange resin when three times as much deionized water at 25°C as ion-exchange resin is passed through the ion-exchange resin at an LHSV (liquid hour space velocity) of 1.0hr-1 to give an effluent exhibiting a pH of 5 or above at 25°C, and only such a high-quality strongly acidic ion-exchange resin is selected and used in the above production. According to the invention, a high-quality strongly acidic ion-exchange resin free from the eluation of residual sulfonic acid can be easily selected in the production of bisphenol A, which leads to stable production of bisphenol A having a good hue. Further, the water consumption in washing a catalyst prior to the production of bisphenol A can be reduced, which leads to a lower wastewater disposal cost and stable long-period use of a catalyst.
