    • PURPOSE: A method of recovering catalytic metals from a fluid containing catalytic metal colloids by concentrating the catalytic metal colloids as a precipitate on a filter followed by burning or incinerating the filter containing the catalytic metal colloids, and then retrieving the catalytic metals is provided. CONSTITUTION: The method of recovering catalytic metal from a fluid comprises the steps of (a) concentrating catalytic metal colloids as a precipitate on a filter; (b) incinerating the filter containing the precipitate to form an ash and to oxidize the catalytic metal of the catalytic metal colloid; and then (c) retrieving the catalytic metal from the ash, wherein greater than 90% by weight of the catalytic metal is recovered from the fluid, and wherein the catalytic metal comprises copper, beryllium, aluminum, tungsten, tellurium, nickel, silver, germanium, molybdenum, selenium, rhodium, osmium, iridium, ruthenium, lead, magnesium, gold, platinum, palladium, or mixtures thereof. The method of recovering catalytic metal from a dragout bath comprises the steps of (a) concentrating catalytic metal colloids as a precipitation on a filter; (b) incinerating the filter with the precipitate to form an ash and an oxide of a catalytic metal; (c) milling the ash to reduce ash particle size; (d) blending the reduced particle size to form fines; (e) solubilizing the fines to form a solution and to convert the oxide to catalytic metal ions; (f) contacting the solubilized fines with an adsorbent to remove the catalytic metal ions from the fines; and then (g) eluting the adsorbent with a buffer to retrieve catalytic metal.

    • PURPOSE: A method for recovering catalytic metals from fluids containing catalytic metal colloids and precipitated solids, and a method for recovering catalytic metal from fluids containing catalytic metal colloids and precipitated solids by a two-step method are provided. CONSTITUTION: The method of recovering a catalytic metal from a catalytic metal colloid containing composition comprises (a) concentrating the catalytic metal colloid on a filter(42); then (b) removing the catalytic metal of the catalytic metal colloid from the filter with an oxidizer; and then (c) collecting the catalytic metal, wherein the oxidizer is an acid solution, wherein a weight ratio of non-catalytic metal to catalytic metal of the colloid is reduced to from about 40% to about 95% of the weight ratio after filtering the composition, wherein the filter entraps at least about 65% by weight of the catalytic metal colloid in the composition, wherein the catalytic metal comprises copper, beryllium, aluminum, tungsten, tellurium, nickel, silver, germanium, molybdenum, selenium, rhodium, osmium, iridium, ruthenium, lead, magnesium, gold, platinum, palladium, or mixtures thereof, wherein the filter comprises a thermoplastic polymer, hydrophilic material, activated carbon, silica gel, alumina, silica-alumina, silicon carbide, zirconium silicate, diatomaceous earth, or mixtures thereof, wherein the method further comprises the step of rinsing the filter with an aqueous wash after entrapping the catalytic metal colloid to rinse non-catalytic metal colloid components from the filter, wherein the catalytic metal colloid containing composition comprises an aqueous rinse or dragout bath from a printed circuit board, and wherein the catalytic metal is collected on an adsorbent.

    • PURPOSE: A method of recovering catalytic metals from fluid compositions containing catalytic metal colloids using a porous metal filter is provided. CONSTITUTION: The method comprises the processes of (a) concentrating catalytic metal colloids as a precipitate on a porous metal filter; then (b) removing the precipitate from the porous metal filter by backwashing the precipitate with a fluid; then (c) solubilizing the precipitate to form a solution; and then (d) retrieving the catalytic metal from the solution, wherein greater than 90% by weight of the catalytic metal is recovered from the fluid, wherein the catalytic metal comprises copper, beryllium, aluminum, tungsten, tellurium, nickel, silver, germanium, molybdenum, selenium, rhodium, osmium, iridium, ruthenium, lead, magnesium, gold, platinum, palladium, or mixtures thereof, wherein the catalytic metal comprises from about 0.0001% by weight to about 0.05% by weight of the fluid, wherein the catalytic metal colloid is solubilized with an oxidizing agent, wherein a terminal pressure ranges from about 40 psi to about 125 psi. The method of recovering catalytic metal from a drag out bath comprises the processes of (a) concentrating catalytic metal colloids as a precipitate on a porous metal filter; then (b) removing the precipitate from the porous metal filter by backwashing the precipitate with a fluid; then (c) solubilizing the precipitate to form a solution; then (d) contacting the solution with an adsorbent to retrieve catalytic metal ions on the adsorbent; and then (e) retrieving the catalytic metal from the adsorbent by contacting the adsorbent with a buffer.
