    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To attain high recording density by improving spread spectrum of a signal light on a hologram recording medium by using a phase mask, and by reducing the diameter of the signal light by an aperture resulting from the suppression of an intersymbol interference. SOLUTION: The recording apparatus includes: an intensity modulator for modulating light intensity for each pixel in accordance with recording data; and a phase modulator having respective pixels having a 1 to 1 relation with respective pixels of the intensity modulator, for variably modulating the optical phase for each pixel. In this case, by successively setting the phase modulation pattern of the phase modulator in accordance with the data pattern in the signal light, the phase can be modulated while successively setting the phase modulation pattern in consideration of the intersymbol interference in accordance with the data, insted of the conventional manner using the phase mask with a fixed phase modulation pattern.     • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a hologram recording device and a hologram recording method, which can securely enhance the recording density onto a hologram recording medium by multiplex recording. SOLUTION: The multiplex recording with respect to the depth direction of the hologram recording medium is performed by controlling the distance between a phase modulation element and the hologram recording medium, and the multiplex recording with respect to the direction along the surface of the hologram recording medium is performed by controlling the light convergence point. Because a reference light passes through the phase modulation element, the multiplex recording can be performed without largely varying the distance between the phase modulation element and the hologram recording medium and the light convergence point. The multiplex recording is performed by varying the distance with respect to two (or three) directions, and the recording density can be enhanced by combining the multiplex recording.
