    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method of manufacturing a glass fiber by which the manufacturing yield is remarkably improved by suppressing the generation of bubbles formed during the melting of glass to remove the bubbles incorporated in the glass fiber to attain high non-defective rate and the glass fiber manufactured by the manufacturing method.SOLUTION: In the method of manufacturing the glass fiber in which molten glass after passed through holding temperatures of many stages in a glass melting vessel is spun from a nozzle, the content of SOin a glass raw material mixture charged in the glass melting vessel in the first melting step is controlled to ≥0.05 mass% and ≤0.30 mass% per total quantity of the glass raw material mixture, the maximum holding temperature A in the first melting step is ≥1,350°C and the maximum holding temperature B in the melting stages on and after the second melting stage is higher than the maximum holding temperature A in the first melting step.

      SOLUTION: The glass fiber production apparatus 10 is one provided with a cooling tube 30 that cools extruded glass fibers F in proximity to nozzles 20 provided on the bottom of a substantially rectangular bushing 11, wherein the cooling tube 30 is formed so as to be substantially parallel with the longitudinal direction of the bottom of the substantially rectangular bushing 11, the length L of that part of the cooling tube 30 which is substantially parallel with the longitudinal direction of the cooling tube 30 is in the range of 0.2-10.0 m, and one gathering means 40 that gathers monofilaments F extruded from the nozzles arranged along the longitudinal direction of the substantially rectangular bottom of the bushing 11 into one strand S is provided.
