    • PURPOSE:To simply obtain the title compound of high purity with excellent color tone by liquid phase oxidation of the substituent(s) of an alkyl- and/or acyl-substituted naphthalene compound into a crude product which is then esterified, hydrolyzed and put to precipitation by addition of an acid. CONSTITUTION:Firstly, crude naphthalenecarboxylic acid(NCA) is produced by liquid phase oxidation using molecular oxygen of a naphthalene compound having substituent(s) selected from alkyl group, acyl group and oxidized intermediates therefrom in a solvent consisting of a lower aliphatic monocarboxylic acid in the presence of an oxidizing catalyst. The crode NCA is then esterified in the presence of an acid catalyst, and the resulting esterified product is washed with water, if desired, to remove water-soluble impurities, and hydrolyzed in water or its mixture with a water-miscible organic solvent in the presence of 1-5 equivalent, per ester group in the ester, of an alkali catalyst to remove insolubles by means of e.g. filtration. Thence, an appropriate acid is added to the resultant filtrate to precipitate NCA crystal, thus obtaining the objective NCA crystal >=99.5% in purity and >=0.05 in optical density.
