    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a document reader which can restrain an increase in device size and in manufacturing costs even when the document reader is composed so as to detect a document size before it starts reading a document image.SOLUTION: For a document whose size cannot be determined because the distance of a transport path from paper feed to before reading is short, a temporary document size is informed to a controller unit and, after image data corresponding to an image on read document is written into image memory, the written image data is transferred to an image processing unit. Further, if a double side read mode is specified, the image memory is set to an overlap mode before image data is written into. In this way, the transport path from paper feed to before reading can be shortened, and an automatic paper selection function and an automatic magnification selection function can be performed without adding an inversion path separately and without extending the image memory.
