    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image input device provided with an image sensor, wherein the image quality of an image to be read is improved.
      SOLUTION: The image input device for reading an original by moving a carriage mounted with the image sensor 202 and 3-color LEDs in a subscanning direction of the original by a motor 300 includes: a controller 100 for controlling driving of the motor 300, operations of the image sensor 202, and turning on/off of the LEDs; and an encoder 400 for outputting an edge signal to the controller 100 when detecting a moving amount of the carriage by one subscanning line. Then every time the controller 100 receives the edge signal from the encoder 400, the controller 100 sequentially turns on/off the 3-color LEDs, sequentially reads electric charges stored in the image sensor 202 while the respective LEDs are turned on, and thereafter discards the electric charges stored in the image sensor 202 until the controller 100 receives a succeeding edge signal.

    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve a design flexibility for an image reading apparatus which performs a reading operation matched with the speed of an object to be conveyed.
      SOLUTION: The image reading apparatus includes a line sensor for reading a document in a main scanning direction for one line by executing a reading operation each time a line-start signal is input, conveys a reading unit or the document in a sub scanning direction and repeatedly inputs the line-start signal, thereby reading the overall document for each line. Specifically, the period of an output signal from an encoder mounted on a motor for driving an object to be conveyed, is measured and the latest measurement value is stored and held. Each time the lapse of a time from the final input of the line-start signal to the line sensor becomes equal to or longer than a time calculated by multiplying the latest measurement by a correction coefficient, the line-start signal is input to the line sensor. The correction coefficient is set to a value calculated by dividing encoder resolution by a reading resolution, the encoder resolution being the number of pulses which are output from the encoder when the object to be conveyed is moved for a unit length in the sub scanning direction.

SOLUTION: A multi-functional apparatus stops and resumes a reading operation according to the free space of a buffer. Before suspending reading, however, a period of time elapsing between an input of an edge detection signal of the encoder and an input of a line start signal is measured by an N counter, and at the same time, the current position of a transferred object is detected by a position counter based on the edge detection signal.
