    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reading device which makes it possible to share a motor in an ADF mode and an FB mode and drive document transport and read in either the normal or the reverse rotation direction of the motor without avoiding increase in cost.SOLUTION: The image reading device comprises: a read unit including a movable sensor; a first read mechanism for reading a document placed on a document holder by moving the read unit; a second read mechanism for reading the document by transporting the document to the read unit; a common drive source for driving the first read mechanism and the second read mechanism; a transmission unit for transmitting drive forces from the drive source to the first read mechanism and the second read mechanism, respectively; and a switching unit for changing the direction of rotation of the second read mechanism in which it is driven to normal or reverse against the drive source which rotates in one direction. The switching unit operates according to the movement of the read unit.

    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a technique capable of shortening a reading time in an image reading device which operates a transportation part and a carriage with a common motor.SOLUTION: An image reading device includes a switch gear and a control part. The switch gear is switched to a carriage side position (FB side position) where a motor side transmission gear and a carriage side transmission gear which transmits power to a carriage are connected, and to a transportation part side position (ADF side position) where the motor side transmission gear and a transportation part side transmission gear which transmits power to the transportation part transporting a manuscript are connected. The control part executes prediction processing (steps S31, S32) which predicts whether or not a transportation part reading (ADF reading) mode for reading the manuscript transported by the transportation part before accepting an image reading start instruction by a reading part and switch processing (step S34) for switching the switch gear to the transportation part side position when it is predicted that the transportation part reading mode is executed.
