    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for elongating a glass body which can restrain a variation along a longitudinal direction of a refractive index structure inside the glass body after elongation.
      SOLUTION: The outer diameter of a core portion 21 is measured by an outer diameter measuring device 14 in the range where the outer diameter of the core portion 21 in the longitudinal direction of the glass body 20 is decreasing as a result of heating by a heating source 13. A distancing speed between holders 11 and 12 or a moving speed of the heating source 13 in the longitudinal direction of the glass body 20 is determined so that the outer diameter of the core portion 21 after elongation becomes a desired value based on the outer diameter of this measured core portion 21. Then, the holder 12 or the heating source 13 is moved to elongate the glass body 20 based on the determined speed.

    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To quickly measure returning light, having a plurality of different wavelengths from an optical fiber to be measured, and to easily compare the measured results.
      SOLUTION: Return light is supplied to a light-electricity processing section 30 as a light, having a plurality of different wavelengths λ1-λn by a light wave- demultiplexing section 20 and is converted to an electrical signal, and is sampled by each of processing circuits 402-40n and is formed as a desired measurement waveform. In this case, a sampling clock, having a frequency corresponding to each wavelength, is supplied from oscillators 502-50n for sampling. Furthermore, the phase difference of a sampling clock is compared by a phase comparison circuit 604 by a timing control section 60, and a second timing signal T2, when addition processing is made from a timing generation circuit 606 is supplied to each of processing circuits 402-40n for addition processings. As a result of the measured waveform, the corresponding sampling point is expressed as measurement data, at the same distance of an optical fiber.

    • PURPOSE:To measure distribution very precisely without destruction by arranging a lens behind a preform, a knife-edge between the preform and lens, and a space filter, having a laterally long slit, in the rear focal plane of the lens. CONSTITUTION:A preform 11 is held vertically (in direction z) in a refrective index adjusting liquid having the same refractive index as that of a clad. This preform 11 is irradiated with parallel laser light 12 laterally; and a lens 13 is arranged a distance L' away from the preform 11, a knife-edge 14 is arranged between the preform 11 and lens 13 and a distance L away from the preform, and a space filter 15 having a laterally long slit is arranged in the rear focal plane of the lens 13. Further, a TV camera 16 is arranged behind the filter 15. Consequently, the light forms an image through the lens 13 from the center surface of the preform 11 by way of the knife-edge 14 to observe a pattern regarding the knife-edge 14 which is obtained through the filter 15.
