    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a volume hologram recording photosensitive composition having an excellent sensitivity to the light in the wavelength range of a short wavelength light source.
      SOLUTION: The symmetrical squarylium compound is expressed by general formula (I), where R

      2 are the same or different from each other and represent; alkyl groups which may have a substitution group alkoxyl groups which may have a substitution group aralkyl groups which may have a substitution group heterocycle alkyl groups which may have a substitution group aryl groups which may have a substitution group heterocycle groups which may have a substitution group or alternatively each of R
      1 and R
      2 can form a heterocycle group together with its adjoining nitrogen atoms. The volume hologram recording photosensitive composition contains the symmetrical squarylium compound, a polymerized monomer, and a radical generating agent.
