Since a range of the peak is changed corresponding to the thickness of a disk 10, whether the disk 10 is a DVD or a CD can be discriminated. A discriminated result is sent to a controller 18, where a changeover signal for changing the DVD/CD is generated and is supplied to the decoder 14. Based on the inputted changeover signal, a changeover is made between servo systems and signal reproducing systems corresponding to the DVD/CD by the decoder 14.

The signal SPPX is made to pass an LPF(low pass filter) 104, the SL signal passing the LPF is made to pass an HPF(high pass filter) 105, and the SB signal passing the HPF is binarized by a binarizing unit 107 and fed to a servo circuit 15 after the wobbling extraction signal SDTT is extracted from it. The SL signal passing the LPF or the SB signal passing the HPF is selected and adjusted in phase by a phase adjuster 102a, and the limit level signals SWL and SUL are generated by the limit level generator based on the signal SSW adjusted in phase.

A CPU 5 watches, as the recording state, a value of Vmp, or a difference (Vmp-Vsp) or a ratio (Vmp/Vsp) divided by an intensity of laser light which is set for forming a mark, and controls the intensity of laser light so as to be proper.

That is to say, regarding the absolute time, an optical disk is turned quickly in the case of a high-speed recording operation at N-times, and every pulse width of write pulses shown in Fig. (B) becomes by its portion shorter than every pulse width of a recording operation at one times as shown in Fig. (C). That is to say, regarding the absolute time, every pulse width of write pulses by this method becomes a little longer than 1/N with reference to the recording operation at one times. In this manner, in the high-speed recording operation at N-times, every pulse width of a recorded waveform is not made simply small to 1/N. but it is set to be a little larger than the speed. As a result, the value, of the product of time multipled by power, at which a data pit to be formed is supplied is made proper.

Switch circuits 8, 9, 5 apply switch control to an input series and I-and P-pictures of 1 GOP and an I-picture relating to a preceding GOP in the forward direction are decoded and reproduced and the result is stored in a frame memory 2a, and a B picture of 1 GOP is stored in a data memory 7 without converting the coded data of the B-picture. While the data in the memories 7, 2a are being rewritten by the FILO system, the B-picture in the data memory 7 are decoded and reproduced and a switch circuit 6 is switch-controlled to provide an output of reproduced image data of each picture continuously in the reverse order.
