    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing more practical ceria-zirconia composite oxide material.SOLUTION: According to the method, a water-in-oil type emulsion in which ceria raw material and zirconia raw material are contained in the water droplets, is formed; a neutralizer is added to the water-in-oil type emulsion to obtain cerium-zirconium hydroxide particles, which are then calcinated under a reductive atmosphere to obtain a first calcinated body comprising ceria-zirconia composite oxide and carbide; the first calcinated body is calcinated under an oxidative atmosphere to remove the carbide in the first calcinated body and obtain a second calcinated body; and heat the raw material liquid that contains water, a hydroxy group containing compound comprising at least two hydroxy groups, and the second calcinated body, and that is alkaline, to separate particles of ceria-zirconia composite oxide having pyrochlore phase from the second calcinated body.
