    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To produce an olefin trimerizing catalyst containing a low valent tantalum compound and having excellent characteristics of being capable of trimerizing olefins with a simple operation without requiring an alkylating agent and advancing a reaction with high selectivity, and an olefin trimerizing method using the catalyst. SOLUTION: The olefin trimerizing catalyst containing the low valent tantalum compound and the olefin trimerizing method for trimerizing the olefins in the presence of the olefin trimerizing catalyst are disclosed. The low valent tantalum compound is a tantalum compound of valency lower than a pentavelent compound, and preferably is a trivalent tantalum compound. Particularly, in the case of using ethylene as a raw material olefin, 1-hexene useful as a raw material comonomer of LLDPE (linear low density polyethylene) can be efficiently manufactured with high selectivity.     • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To stably produce 1-hexene with an excellent selectivity.
      SOLUTION: In performing the trimerization reaction of ethylene with the use of a catalyst system comprising a tantalum compound and an alkylating agent containing a metal, the method for preparing 1-hexene is performed under the conditions that the water content in the reaction system is not more than 4 molar times the tantalum atom and/or the amount of a molecular oxygen is not more than 2 molar times the tantalum atom. As the tantalum compound, a tantalum halide is preferred and specifically, tantalum pentafluoride, tantalum pentachloride, tantalum pentabromide or tantalum pentaiodide can be mentioned, and tantalum pentachloride or tantalum pentabromide is preferred. The tantalum compound and the alkylating agent are mixed at an optimum ratio in order to obtain an optimum 1-hexene selectivity and a maximum catalytic activity.
