    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an apparatus of compact size and expand its versatility by integrating a drive unit and a control unit without being influenced by noise. SOLUTION: In this internally-mounted structure of a retarder controller of an auxiliary braking system provided with an electromagnetic retarder body with an exciter built in, its drive unit, and a control unit of generating control signals, a case 31 having a rising stage in the center of the inner bottom thereof is formed, and a power rectifying element 25 is disposed in the center. The drive unit of a substrate 34 surrounded by a long tall part attached with the side of the rising platform 32 of the case 31 and the control unit disposed with a substrate 35 taking a space from the substrate 34 are stored in the case 31. Both the substrates 34, 35 are electrically connected to each other, and a power system and its control system in the substrate 34 are separated. Lead wires to the outside of the case are drawn out respectively from a surface facing the side surface of the case 31 with the power system and the control system separated.

    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a retarder, the reliability of which can be improved as a system and from which an initial failure that does not bad to serious consequence can be detected even if failure should happen. SOLUTION: A retarder is provided with a plurality of electrically insulated exciter coil groups 118, the same number as the exciter groups as electrically insulated field coil groups 116, and the same number of power supply circuits 46 and each control unit is constituted, by pairing one exciter coil group 118 and one field coil group 116 to one power supply circuit 46. The retarder is also provided with exciter generating voltage detecting means 45 which respectively detects the AC voltages induced in the exciter coil groups 118 of the control units, output voltage detecting means 48 which detect the voltages supplied to the field coil groups 116, and a controller which discriminates failures, based on the signals from the exciter generating voltage detecting means 45 and output voltage detecting means 48.

    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To operate a retarder normally before operation when there is possibility that the inside of the retarder is frozen and the retarder is not worked normally. SOLUTION: In the antifreezing device for the retarder, which has an exciter, in which an exciting current flows through an exciting oil at voltage generated in the exciter and magnetic poles are magnetized successively into mutually different N poles and N poles and by which braking torque is acquired by generating an eddy current in a rotary drum, the exciting coil is divided into a plurality of blocks while a switch 24 changing over the exciting current and a thawing current flowed through one exciting coil 23 in the exciting coils 21, 22, 23 of the split blocks and a battery 12 for flowing the thawing current through one exciting coil 23 in the exciting coils 21, 22, 23 are installed, and the antifreezing device is constituted so as to flow the thawing current through one exciting coil 23 disposed at a place, where there is the possibility of freezing, and configured so as to eliminate the freezing of the retarder before operation.
