    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a color image recording device capable of attaining the miniaturization of an intermediate transfer unit and also capable of shortening the printing time. SOLUTION: During the operation of switching image forming units 1Bk, 1Y, 1M and 1C, the rotation of an intermediate transfer belt 32 is stopped or the belt 32 is rotated at a low speed. Thus, by stopping the rotation of the intermediate transfer belt or rotating the belt at low speed during the time when the following image forming unit is moved up to an image forming position so that the previous color image leading end on the intermediate transfer belt may not reach the transfer position before the leading end of the image supplied by the following color image forming unit reaches a transfer position after the following color image forming unit is moved up to an image forming position even in the case of leaving a time of switching the image forming units as it is, a time until the following color image is transferred on to the intermediate transfer belt is shortened. Thus, it is possible to start the printing operation just after the following color image forming unit reaches the image forming position, then, the printing time is shortened.

    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a color image recording device that an intermediate transfer part has a structure miniaturized/simplified, and the maintenance property is satisfactory. SOLUTION: An intermediate transfer belt unit 2 is constituted so that an intermediate transfer belt 3 and a first transfer roller 4 composed of an elastic body are housed therein, and it is provided with a pair of rollers 16 for keeping a nipping quantity constant between the intermediate transfer belt 3 and a photoreceptor 11, and moreover contact/separation with/from the photoreceptor 11 is repeated. The image formed on the photoreceptor 11, transferred to the intermediate transfer belt 3, and further transferred on recording paper. The intermediate transfer belt unit 2 is inserted in the device from the front of device and allow the intermediate transfer belt 3 to be arranged opposite to the photoreceptor 11. The intermediate transfer belt 3, is brought in press contact with the photoreceptor 11 from the opposite side of an exposure position on the photoreceptor 11, and the press contact direction of the intermediate transfer belt 3, with respect to the photoreceptor 11 and the press contact direction of the third transfer roller 12 with regard to the intermediate transfer roller 3 are approximately the same direction.

    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a color image recorder hardly damaging the surface of a photoreceptor and having an excellent maintainability. SOLUTION: An image formation unit group 14 is constituted by attachably/ detachably combining and arranging plural image formation units 13 (13C, 13M, 13Y and 13BK) having a developer hopper 23 and the photoreceptor 19 nearly annularly and adjacently to each other. The image formation unit group 14 has a cylindrical space having an optical path changing means at a center part, and is divided into plural individual unit housing spaces having a nearly sector-shaped cross section, and houses the image formation unit 13 in them. The position of an intermediate transfer belt 3 is controlled so that it is not brought into contact with the photoreceptor 19 by moving a first transfer roller 4 at the standstill time of the recorder and it is brought into contact with the photoreceptor 19 by moving the first transfer roller 4 at the time of forming an image. The intermediate transfer belt 3 is positioned at a withdrawal position at the time of the rotating operation of the image formation unit group 14, so that the photoreceptor 19 and the intermediate transfer belt 3 are not brought into contact with each other.
