    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a transparent poloration-free high-quality polycarbonate at a high polymerization rate without causing violent foaming by transesterifying an aromatic diol compound with a carbonic diester in the presence of an antifoam. SOLUTION: The antifoam used is desirably (A) a compound having an 8C or higher linear hydrocarbon structure, (B) a polyalkylene oxide compound, or (C) a polysiloxane compound. Compound A is desirably a higher alcohol, its derivative, a higher fatty acid, its derivative, or the like. Compound B is a compound having a structure represented by the formula: -(O-R3-O)n-, wherein R3 is a 2-6C alkylene; and n is an integer of 2 or greater in the molecule. Compound C is a compound having a structure represented by the formula, wherein R4 and R5 are each a 1-10C alkyl; and n is 6-500 in the molecule. It is desirable that the antifoam has a number-average molecular weight of 200-30,000 and is used in an amount of 0.01-5,000 ppm based on the weight of the aromatic diol compound.
