    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To generate stable braking force by preventing an increase in temperature of a friction material, even in a high-speed or large-capacity elevator.SOLUTION: In an emergency stop device for an elevator, in order to stop a car 11 of the elevator, a guide rail 13 installed on a hoistway is pressed by a brake pad 15 and slides, thereby generating a braking force. The brake pad 15 includes: a plurality of friction materials 51 and 52 for generating the braking force with the guide rail 13; and a support 21 for supporting the friction materials 51 and 52. The friction materials 51 and 52 include: a first friction material 51 arranged at the front in a direction where the car 11 falls down; and a second friction material 52 arranged behind the first friction material 51. The thermal conductivity of the first friction material 51 is set higher than the second friction material 52.
