    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To maintain conventional capacity of a defect list to achieve compatibility with a conventional device and efficiency of start process even when a defect cluster is increased by increase of the capacity when the capacity is tried to be further increased by multi-layer technique.
      SOLUTION: Even when more defect alternative processing is required due to increase of recording capacity, as a number of successive clusters is shown using a portion of a status or a sector address display part for alternative of the successive clusters, alternative processing can be instructed using one DFL entry, so that it is possible to instruct more defect alternatives using less DFL entry while maintaining high compatibility with the conventional device and to prevent increase of the capacity of the defect list.

When the decoded sign is determined to be normal, the update program on the temporary storage device is copied to a flash ROM 113 where a control program of a CPU 114 is stored.
