    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a controller and a controlling method for compensating a phase error in a rotation sensor over the entire operational range of a synchronous machine. SOLUTION: This controller which controls an inverter and is used for an electric rolling stock is provided with a current command generating part for generating a d-axis current command and a q-axis current command, a phase computing part for computing a phase θand speed N used for coordinate transformation based on the output of the rotation sensor, a current control part for calculating d, q-axis voltage command values Vs, Vq based on the d, q-axis current commands and the detected value of the d, q-axis currents from synchronous motor current, a coordinate transforming part for coordinate-transforming the d, q-axis voltage command values Vd, Vq to compute AC voltage command values Vur, Vvr, Vwr, and a PWM signal generating part for generating a drive signal of the inverter based on the AC voltage command value. Further, the controller involves a phase compensating part which compensates the output of the rotation sensor, and the phase compensating art compensates a phase angle θ0 computed by the rotation sensor at the phase computing part using a magnetic pole phase estimated value θc computed based on a synchronous signal of motor current and a PWM signal at a magnet pole phase computing part.
