CONSTITUTION:When write voltage is impressed to a group of write electrodes 10, 10,... by linear sequence, aux. discharge is made sequentially line by line in the intersecting part with aux. electrodes 9, 9,.... Charged particles for pilot light generated by this aux. discharge are led into display discharge cells 7, 7,... in corresponding two lines among display discharge cells 7, 7. When voltage is impressed to X-electrodes 4, 4,... selected for displaying out of X-electrodes 4, 4,..., therefore, discharge for displaying is performed between X-0 and Y- electrodes of the display discharge cells 7, 7 corresponding to the intersection of these X-electrodes 4, 4,... with the write electrodes 10 to which the write voltage is impressed in the impress timing to these X-electrodes 4, 4,..., and the discharge is maintained to allow light emission in the corresponding part of a fluorescent layer 3.

    • PURPOSE:To make it possible to easily increase the gradation number of halftone so as to display high quality picture in the halftone control with pulse number modulation by constructing one picture element for display with respective discharge cells piled up in one column in laminated display panels. CONSTITUTION:A display panel P1 is constructed so as that the discharge cell groups 61-81 of which consist of respective crossed portions of scanning electrode group Y11,12,... to which scanning signals are supplied and data electrode group X11,12,... to which display data signals are supplied arranged in a matrix, and display panels P1-P2 are laminated to construct one picture element for display with respective discharge cells 6-8 piled up in one column. As the result, the display gradation number of respective picture elements 6-8 can be presented as the sum of the display gradation number of respective discharge cells 61-81, 62-82 of display panels P1 and P2, and when the halftone is controlled with pulse number modulation, the pulse duration of the scanning signals to access one row of respective display panels P1, P2 can be elongated to several times than that in the case of one display panel to drive in low velocity. Thereby the gradation number of the halftone can be easily increased to obtain high quality display.

    • PURPOSE:To seal glass tubes readily and excellently, by heating a glass tube by a first heater having an insertion hole with a relatively larger diameter than that of the glass tube and cutting the glass tube by a second heater having an insertion hole with a somewhat large diameter. CONSTITUTION:A first heater 1 consists of a holder 2 made of ceramic and equipped with a glass tube insertion hole 3 having about 50-60% larger diameter than the outer diameter of a glass tube 16 to be sealed and of a coil-shaped heater 4 winding the holder 2. A second heater 5 equipped with an insertion hole 7 having about 5% larger diameter than that of the glass tube 16 is formed, both the heaters 1 and 5 are inserted through a spacer 11 into a casing 9 and the casing is closed with a cover 13. In the constitution, the glass tube 16 to be sealed is inserted through insertion holes 14, 3, 12, 7 and 10 into the casing. First electricity is sent to the first heater 1, the glass tube 16 is softened to produce a neck and electricity is changed to the second heater 5 to heat and cut the neck part. Then electricity is resent to the first heater 1 to finish the sealed part.

    • PURPOSE:To promote emission of secondary electrons and enhance the brightness and efficiency in light emission by forming an inter-cell barrier for prevention of color cross-talk in correspondence to a group of cells of individual discharge, and by forming an oxide film on the wall surface of this inter-cell barrier. CONSTITUTION:When sequential scanning pulses are impressed on either of the X electrode group and Y electrode group, for ex. Xn, Xn+1,..., while indication pulses on the other electrode group Ym, Ym+1,..., discharge takes place between for ex. Xm electrode with discharge voltage impressed and individual discharge electrodes 6, 6... of the Ym, Ym+1,..., electrodes, and corresponding discharge cells S, S,... make discharge light emission. Provision of an inter-cell barrier 8 raises the discharge voltage with color cross-talk prevented. A MgO film 9 is formed. This improves the secondary electron emitting efficiency and sinks the discharge voltage. which smoothens the drive and increases the brightness and efficiency in light emission.

    • PURPOSE:To reduce the time of evacuating the inside of a plasma display panel (PDP) or enclosing a discharge gas in the PUP, and to obtain a high luminous brightness, by forming a gap for ventilation between the top end surfaces of a fence body group and the opposite inner surface of a rear side plate, and spreading a phosphor on the side surfaces facing the display discharge cells of the fence body group. CONSTITUTION:Since a gap 8 for ventilation is formed between the top end surfaces of a fence body group 6m-1, 6m,...which are projected from the opposing inner surface of a front side plate 1, and the opposite inner surface of a rear side plate 2, the fence body group 6m-1, 6m,... never disturb the flow of gas. Moreover, since a phosphor is spread on the side surfaces facing the display discharge cells Dl, m of the fence body group 6m-1, 6m,..., the luminous area of the phosphor depending on the discharge is increased. Therefore, a high luminous brightness can be obtained,as well as the time to evacuate the PDP and to enclose a discharge gas therein can be reduced.
