    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic recording medium for replaying with an MR head which is a conventionally used coating-type magnetic recording medium having excellent productivity and available at a low price and which is excellent in high density characteristics with low noise including thermal asperity. SOLUTION: The magnetic recording medium for replaying with an MR head has a lower layer which is substantially nonmagnetic and a magnetic layer having ferromagnetic hexagonal ferrite powder dispersed in a binder, formed in this order on a supporting body. By the frequency analysis of the surface roughness of the magnetic layer, the intensity at 100/mm space frequency is and the intensity at 500/mm space frequency is 50 to 500 nm . The average particle diameter of the ferromagnetic hexagonal ferrite powder is 15 to 35 nm.
