    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent a clutch from slipping when an engine is started. SOLUTION: The clutch is provided with a power transmission 16 integrally with a carrier 12 supporting a planetary gear 13 of reduction gears. An output shaft 3 is fitted on helical spline for the power transmission 16. On outer periphery of the output shaft 3, a pinion shaft 5 fits via a first bearing 4a and a second bearing 4b and furthermore one way clutch 7 which transmits rotation of the output shaft 3 on the pinion shaft 5 is equipped. The first bearing 4a can receive load applied from a ring gear 21 to a pinion 6 by the first bearing 4a and the second bearing 4b when cranking because a tip end itself (a pinion side end part) projects from the tip end of a housing bearing 8 to pinion side when the pinion 6 meshes with the ring gear 21. As a result, the clutch can prevent itself from slipping and transmit higher torque if higher load is applied on the pinion 6 because tilt of the pinion shaft 5 can be reduced. COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO

    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve engine startability without changing center pitch Cp between a pinion gear 3 and a ring gear. SOLUTION: The pinion gear 3 is formed by the same gear cutting material as that of a first gear having the number of teeth of 11 sheets, has the same diametral pitch as that of the first gear by performing gear cutting as a minus transfer for the gear cutting material and is provided to have the number of teeth (12 sheets) more than that of the first gear by one sheet. The center pitch Cp between the pinion gear 3 and the ring gear therefore is the same as the center pitch Cp when the first gear is used as the pinion gear 3. A gear ratio (the number of sheets of ring gears/the number of sheets of pinion gears) with the ring gear becomes small by increasing the number of teeth of the pinion gear 3 from 11 sheets to 12 sheets in this way, and thereby engine speed is raised at the time of cranking to improve engine startability. SOLUTION: The starter comprises a sealing member 19 arranged outside a one-way clutch 5 in the radial direction. The sealing member 19 has an outer periphery portion in the radial direction thereof, held between a front housing 16A and a center case 16B, with its thin portion 19a having a thickness t1 on the inner periphery side in the radial direction thinner than a thickness t2 on the outer periphery side in the radial direction. The sealing member 19 has the thin portion 19a put at its inner periphery end in contact with the outer periphery face of a clutch cover with a proper sealing allowance all over an area where the one-way clutch 5 is moved to the axial direction. Thus, the foreign matters are surely prevented from entering from a window portion of a front housing 16A through the outside of the one-way clutch 5 in the radial direction into the starter (to a motor side).
