    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To form and annihilate a thermal lens in high-speed over a wide operating temperature range without depending on the orientation of an element.SOLUTION: The thermal lens forming element 1 has a container which stores a dye solution having a dyestuff not absorbing light with a wavelength of a signal light but absorbing control light dissolved in a solvent. The container is configured to be a square sectional hallow tube having total four flat surfaces with two external plain surfaces and two internal plain surfaces, in parallel with each other, and both ends of the tube are sealed with fusion. The two external plain surfaces and two internal plain surfaces in parallel with each other are both perpendicular to an optical axis when the signal light goes straight without the irradiation of the control light. The size of the two external plain surfaces and two internal plain surfaces in parallel with each other is the same as an area which the control light and the signal light enter into, and which the emitted signal light going straight or changed the light path thereof passes through. One air bubble 11 exists in contact with a dye solution part 10.

In the light absorption layer of the heat lens forming means 11, the signal light 14 and light 15 for conversion are condensed so that condensing points are made different in a direction perpendicular to an optical axis.
